Today in History: 1st August 1920

Today is the 95th Death Anniversary of the great freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Popularly known as ‘Lokmanya’, Tilak co-founded the Deccan Education Society in Pune and the Kesari (Marathi) & Mahratta (English) newspapers.

 Did you know that on 22 July 1924, the Poona City Municipality unveiled the statue of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak outside the  Mahatma Phule Mandai. You can about it and a lot more about Lokmanya Tilak and the Mandai and many different stories of Pune’s contribution in India’s Freedom Struggle in the book The Freedom Trail Pune.
