Today in History: Gopal Krishna Gokhale

Today in history: The 149th Birth Anniversary of Gopal Krishna Gokhale: founder of Servants of India Society which was formed to promote education, healthcare, sanitization and fight discrimination & untouchability. On the Hill behind the Fergusson College, is the Gokhale Smarak Stambh, where Gopal Krishna Gokhale took the vows of the Servants of India Society. The Servants of India Society established the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in. G.K. Gokhale is associated the moderate school of thinking popularly called the ‘Mavalwadis’ who were directly in opposition with the ‘Jahalwadis’.
